House of Grey and Harmonics:Rise of the Magician update!

Ok so I know you’re probably wondering what the heck happened to me and Chris. We aren’t podfading or anything like that. You’ve all probably read our big announcement concerning the House of Grey (If you haven’t read the post right before this one) and some of you probably appreciate how much work is going into that project. But for those of you who don’t. Here is the deal.

We are looking at a serialization of the rest of the series of the House of Grey. Now what does this really mean? It means that once a month, minus other major releases, we will be releasing the next volume of the House of Grey. It’s how Charles Dickens did it. And its how we are going to do it. I’m sure you have a couple of questions. These are the most common that I am getting.

WILL THE STORY CHANGE?

Yes! But in a good way and there will be far less changes in the book then I was envisioning for a full chopping rewrite. Now, instead of trying to create the traditional plot arc, beginning to end. I have the freedom to play with the story; much like the original intent of the series. The House of Grey was always supposed to be an experiment in story telling. Now I have the chance to put my money where my mouth is. What does that mean for you? I think a much better story telling experience. I hope

HOW OFTEN ARE YOU GOING TO RELEASE AND WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOU RELEASING?

We are releasing volumes and they will be in 5 to 7 chapter chucks about 25,000 to 30,000 words or 80 pages. I plan on releasing once a month with the first three releases starting every 2 weeks in August.

ARE YOU STILL GOING TO PODCAST?

Absolutely. We are committed to podcasting our projects – at least for the time being:) Might there be a time when we won’t? Possibly. But now is not that time.

WHAT ABOUT HARMONICS? ARE YOU GOING TO PUT THAT ON THE BACK BURNER?

Nope. We are still committed to getting at least two more seasons of Harmonics out this year. The second season is in its final edits as we speak.  We”ll be dropping the podcast, ebook and tradepaper back for Harmonics: Revelations, the next book in the Harmonics series, on August first. The ebook of this next Harmonics season is going to be very special.  We will be providing a sneak preview of the first COMPLETE volume of the House of Grey. This is the redone, revamped start of our titled series. You get the first volume for FREE if you buy Harmonics: Revelations the opening day! How sweet is that?

OK SO WE ARE GOING TO GET THE HOUSE OF GREY IN CHUCKS, WHAT ABOUT COST?

We’ll have the free version available, but since I’m assuming that you want to help your favorite author; we will be selling a version or two. I am going to keep it low priced. The starting price point will 2.99 for the lastest version 1.99 after and .99 after that. Chris and I are still playing with the pricing so this could change. We are hoping to actually turn this into a job, but at the same time keep the books reasonable. This is one of the pricing models we came up with and the one we are leaning towards, but there may be more to be said.

WHAT DOES THE SERIALIZATION OF THE HOUSE OF GREY MEAN FOR YOUR OTHER PROJECTS?

It means a whole heck of a lot of work for me! LOL. I am still planning on writing the other projects. Harmonics: Jadian Sun, the third book in the Harmonics series, is already about 30% done. with Chris and I finishing up the outline this weekend. I wish I could tell you spoliers because its going to be crazy.

WELL THATS HARMONICS…WHAT ELSE ARE YOU WORKING ON?

I’ve got another two books that I have preliminary notes and an initial outline on. The second one is another modern fantasy, like the House of Grey, that I am particularly excited about. Its called Daniel Knight. Its a good one. The other title that I am working on is called Conversations with Death and its a comedy. One that I think is pretty freaking funny. I’ve got another one or two in the coffer but that will have to wait for another time.

BOXERS OR BRIEFS?

Why is that a question you sickos?

lol, ok so that is why we haven’t updated Harmonics in a little while, but we will be back with a vengeance come July and August. Look forward to it.

Collin and Chris.

The House of Grey Volumized (I understand that is not a word)

The day…it seemed like a day just like any other, and technically Monday, May 30, 2011 was a day just like any other. I flew in from a con out in Baltimore and that was cool. It wasn’t my first, nor will it be my last. At that con I got to hang out with the likes of Tee Morris, Scott Sigler, Evo Terra, and Nathan Lowel, just to name a few. I got to reconnect and connect with people I’ve known, but never seen. I even had a “fan” or two approach me about my work. Again, all things that have happened before. No, what was so special about this day was I finally decided what I am going to do with the my premier novel, The House of Grey and because of the decision my heart is full and my fingers are sliding across this keyboard to tell you this news. BUT first, can I say thanks for downloading The House of Grey and supporting Chris and I on this and other projects. The House of Grey has always been a labor of love for me as an author. I wrote it mainly because I wanted something that I thought I would enjoy; a story that spreads across genres and fulfilled the different tastes I have as a reader. I wanted a story that had action, comedy, romance, and thrills spearheaded by a dynamic, diverse, and lovable cast. So that is what I set out to write and is why I ended up writing a 320,000 word novel. That podcast, which has exceeded all my expectations, has been wildly successful in my small sheltered mind. I was looking for an audience- someone to read my book and I found them in droves because of The House of Grey. The problem is however, I’ve created an untamable beast…or so I thought.

Just so you know, it is unheard of to write a 320,000 word YA novel. People don’t do that.  Way too big for the genre and targeted audience. So of course, I thought I needed to split The House of Grey into manageable story lines- maybe a three book construct-  and do so without losing the stuff that makes The House of Grey great. However, I quickly realized that the book was too big and dang near impossible to alter without completely changing the story. For the last two years, I’ve asked myself, what do I do with this book that touched so many people with the characters and conflict and turn it into something that I can feed into the main stream and still give me the chance I seek to continue the story in a way that I am comfortable writing a character focused story.

It hit me today. I have to decided that I will put the story out on my terms. So because of those terms, I now introduce you to The House of Grey Volumed Series. The House of Grey was a serialized podcast that came out over the course of two years. I’ve decided to apply that model to The House of Grey written version. I plan on making this novel available to you very cheaply in volumes of 5 to 7 chapters, with the added benefit of fun cover illustrations, some manga/anime style art for character profiles, and book scenes and messages- like this one from the author. This is the format that we are going to employ for the entire series and will break it up by volume and “arc.” This style is not going to be for everyone, but if you are willing to break from the norm, I think this is a story that is going to rock your socks off.

Chris and I have already started the transformation process.  We do so as we speak. We are planning on doing this, but we want to hear from you. Please Please Please comment on this one as it could affect the project and we really want your feed back.

Thanks for barely reading.

Review Shadow Magic Two The Prince of Hazel and Oak by John Lenahan

Conor is back and finally listeners can find out what happened to him after his stupid choice to go back to the real world instead of stay with his family in the Land. The return trip isn’t roses either as Conor is suspected of murdering his father by police Detective Brenden Fallon. Luckily, Conor and the Scranton cop get sucked back into the magical world of Tir a Nog fairly quickly so you don’t have to spend much time with that nonsense. Conor’s friends and family are excited to see him but Conor’s home coming is short lived. He quickly finds out that his father’s life is in peral and only he can save him. (Ok that’s a bit of a dramatization) Conor leaves on a journey with some old and new friends in attempt to find the one thing that can save his father’s life, if only he can figure out what that is…

PROS: Characters. I love the characters in ShadowMagic. Its hard not to. Even Conor, who I found a bit on the annoying side in the first book, was good. Was there times when he bugged. Absolutely. Still, you can help but love him. Some of the new characters were priceless. Graysea, Brenden, Fau and Spitogg, were all welcome additions to the cast and played their respective roles well. Even though most of them are myhical creatures in some form or another the characters were still easy to emotionally connect with and for me that is the measure of a good character. The story is linear and a bit on the predictable side, but still fun and its not like you see every single twist coming, which is a good thing.

CONS: Opportunities. I think John missed some opportunities with his story telling and the resolution of some of the conflict. Specifically the Turlow conflict. This is a bit of a spolier so stop reading this part if you don’t want to be spoiled. The Turlow turns out to be a bad guy, which I think most people expected. I know I did. However, the resolution of his conflict with Connor really doesn’t happen. The Turlow dies. That is a given, but not before he was confronted and I think that was a shame. It left me wanting very much. I wanted there to be more of a real resolution of that conflict. I also thought that the start of the love triangle between Conor, Essa and Graysea could have been handled better. I think the situation was a little forced and it makes Connor seem like a jerk. The re-writing of the story to work Jesse and Frank too, I wasn’t a fan. It felt a little contrived to me. This is fairly minor I think however.   Those are my chief complaints.

OVERALL: a totally fun story. If you like fantasy AT ALL, you’ll like this follow up novel. The writing is fun and clever. The characters good and the conflict well rounded. There are weaknesses. There is no doubt, but this is an awesome book that I really enjoyed. I think you will too.
